01 — The mountain
Five peaks, three base areas, and what each one means for where you sleep
The resort runs north to south along the Tenmile Range, Peak 6 down to Peak 10. Only two of those peaks have base areas with lodging at the lift: Peak 8 and Peak 9. A third lift, the Snowflake, climbs from a neighborhood tucked between town and mountain. Getting that geography straight before you book is probably the most useful thing a first-time visitor can do.
Peak 6
Opened 2013 · advanced
The northernmost and newest of the five. High, open intermediate-to-expert bowls above the treeline, accessed from Peak 7. No base area and no lodging on it. You ski to it.
Peak 7
Intermediate · gondola mid-station
Long, rolling blue groomers, and the mountain most intermediates spend their week on. The gondola stops at its base, where the Grand Colorado and a small cluster of lodges sit. No beginner terrain.
Peak 8
The original 1961 base · all levels
The heart of the resort. Beginner flats and the Ski & Ride School at the base; the Imperial Express and the high bowls above; the alpine coaster and Fun Park in summer; the top station of the gondola. One Ski Hill Place, Crystal Peak Lodge and Grand Lodge on Peak 8 all sit at the lifts. If skiing is the point of the trip, sleep here.
Peak 9
Beginner & family · closest base to town
The gentlest lower mountain and the base closest to Main Street. Beaver Run and the Village at Breckenridge line its bottom; the Quicksilver SuperChair loads a short walk from the south end of town. The Snowflake Lift, tucked between Peaks 8 and 9, gives the Tyra and Snowflake neighborhoods direct access.
Peak 10
Expert · steep groomers
The southern edge of the resort. A single high-speed quad serves long, steep blacks. No base area; you access it from Peak 9.

Two hours from Denver, and no car once you arrive
From the airport. Denver International to Breckenridge is about 104 miles: I-70 west through the Eisenhower Tunnel to exit 203 at Frisco, then Highway 9 south for ten miles. Two hours in normal conditions, three or four on winter Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons, when ski traffic on I-70 stacks up. Colorado’s Passenger Vehicle Traction Law (M+S or 3PMSF-rated tires, or 4WD/AWD) runs on I-70 from September through May.
Private transfer. Most of our guests skip the rental car. We book the airport transfer ahead of arrival and put it on the reservation, so pickup at the DIA curb runs straight through to the residence door on one bill.
In town. The BreckConnect Gondola runs free from the north end of Main Street to the Peak 7 and Peak 8 base areas in about ten minutes. The Free Ride bus covers the rest of town at no charge, including the Snowflake Lift neighborhood and Peak 9. Summit Stage links Frisco, Keystone and the rest of the county. Main Street itself is a twelve-block walk end to end.

Ski season
Early Nov – May
Opening day usually lands in the second week of November. The season runs later than almost anywhere else in Colorado, often to Memorial Day on Peak 8. Holiday weeks and Presidents' weekend are the pinch points for lodging. January and early April are the value weeks, with the best snow-to-crowd ratio.

Lifts close, the gondola pauses for maintenance, and town gets its breath back after ski season. Trails at 9,600 feet are still shedding snow while the valley greens up. Rates are the lowest of the year.

Seventies in the afternoon, wildflowers by mid-July, the gondola and Peak 8 lifts running for hikers and the Fun Park, the Blue River path and the Jack Nicklaus golf course in town. The 4th of July is Breckenridge at its fullest.

Aspen gold peaks in the last week of September along Boreas Pass and the lower slopes. Oktoberfest fills Main Street. Then a quiet, cool month of snowmaking before the lifts turn.

05 — Altitude
Living well at 9,600 feet
Breckenridge is one of the highest full-resort towns in North America, and altitude is the thing most visitors underestimate. At 9,600 feet the air holds roughly a third less oxygen than at sea level. A first-night headache, poor sleep, breathlessness on the stairs — all normal, and kids and older guests feel it worst. Drink a lot more water than seems necessary, ease off the alcohol the first night, and give yourself a day before you push hard on the mountain.
The best fix we’ve found is oxygen at night. Any of our residences can have a bedside oxygen concentrator running before you arrive: a quiet unit that raises the oxygen level in the bedroom and, for most people, turns the first two nights from restless to ordinary. Request it when you book and it goes on the reservation.
06 — Town
Main Street, the Arts District and the table worth booking
Breckenridge’s Main Street Historic District is the largest in Colorado, with roughly 250 buildings from the 1880s gold-camp years now housing shops, galleries and restaurants along the Blue River. One block east on Ridge Street, Breck Create runs the Arts District: a campus of restored miners’ cabins and studios that puts on ceramics, printmaking, metalwork and glass workshops for visitors, plus the Riverwalk Center’s summer concert season and the town’s public-art program. It’s the best rest-day or rainy-afternoon plan in town, and holiday weeks book out.
Reservations move fast, especially in winter. Book the two or three dinners that matter to you before you fly out. Our own first call is usually Matt Vawter’s Rootstalk on the north end of Main, the small dining room we send guests to when the evening is the point. Beyond that, our office keeps a running shortlist by the shape of the evening you want, a long table for a group, a quiet room for two, the best patio in July, and books tables on request. For nights when nobody wants to put boots back on, we can also send a private chef to the residence.

07 — Ski gear
Skis fitted in your living room, not a rental queue
The rental shop on the first morning is the worst hour of most ski trips. Our residences in Breckenridge and Keystone are gear-ready through Ski Butlers: skis, snowboards, boots and helmets delivered to the residence and fitted on the spot by a tech, with swaps brought to you all week (on the mountain if need be). Gear attaches to the reservation, so nothing is booked, queued for, or paid separately. Four tiers cover first-timers through experts, and kids get sized alongside the rest of the family.

How far is Breckenridge from Denver International Airport?+

Do you need a car in Breckenridge?+

Which peak should a first-time skier choose?+
Peak 9's lower slopes and the Peak 8 base area hold the beginner terrain and the Ski & Ride School. Staying at either base means lessons start a few steps from the door.
Where should families stay?+
The Peak 8 base if the trip is about skiing first — One Ski Hill Place has pools, bowling and movie lounges under one roof. The Snowflake Lift neighborhood works better if the group wants to ski home and then walk down to Main Street for dinner.
Does the altitude affect visitors?+
Almost always, mildly. A first-night headache, poor sleep, breathlessness on stairs. Hydrate, go easy on alcohol the first evening, and consider a bedside oxygen concentrator. We can have one running in the residence before you arrive.
What is the difference between booking direct and booking on Airbnb or VRBO?+
Same residence, same dates, minus the 10–15% service fee the listing sites add at checkout. And a local team on Main Street answering the phone, not a call center. Our residences are never in a resort rental pool, so the unit you choose on the listing is the unit you walk into.
