Three things turn up in older write-ups that are not on the current programme, so do not plan around them: the Ullympics — the frying-pan toss and ski-boot relay — which last appear in 2016 listings; the Ullr Ball; and the Ullr ice plunge. None of them is in the official schedules for 2023, 2024 or 2025. If a page is offering you a frying-pan toss, it is recycling material that is a decade old.

02 — The parade
Where to stand
The parade runs south down Main Street, from Wellington Road to West Adams Avenue. Floats stage beforehand on the 300 block of North Main. Marchers hand out sweets on foot — floats are not permitted to throw anything.
No source we could find gives viewing advice at all, so what follows is ours, from watching it rather than from a press release. Treat it as a local’s recommendation, not an official instruction.
The south end is the loudest, and the most adult
Blue River Plaza is where the crowning happens and where the shotski crowd has just finished. It is the densest part of the route and it has the highest concentration of people who have been standing outside drinking since lunchtime. Good if that is the atmosphere you came for. Less good with a pushchair.
The north end near the staging block is the calmer choice
Up by the 300 block, where floats line up, the crowd is thinner and you see everything before it reaches the crush. This is where we send families with small children.
Around Washington and Lincoln you can walk straight to the bonfire
Standing mid-route leaves you closest to the East Sawmill lot when the parade passes, which matters when several thousand people all start moving in the same direction at once — assuming the bonfire is at East Sawmill again this year, which is not yet confirmed.
Arrive by about half past two
No one publishes a recommended arrival time. Ours is 2:30 p.m., because that is when the shotski line-up starts taking over Main Street and the good spots go. This is our advice, not an official instruction.
03 — With children
The drinking question, honestly
The honest answer is that it depends which part you go to, and no page we found says so plainly. Ullr’s reputation is earned — the early festivals were described as ending in debauchery, and the festival was cancelled for eleven years because it had got too rowdy. The headline act today is around fourteen hundred adults taking a shot together on Main Street half an hour before the parade. But the parade itself is an all-ages town parade, and the tourism office describes the festival as family-friendly with the shotski carved out as the 21-and-over exception.

04 — Making a trip of it
Come for Ullr, stay through Christmas
We will be straight with you, because it is the reason to trust the rest of this page: Ullr is a town festival, the crowd is largely local and Front Range, and the headline events are over in an afternoon. It is a wonderful afternoon. It is not, on its own, a four-day trip. What makes this weekend worth booking is where it sits in the calendar.
Saturday 19 December is when the school holidays start
That is the quiet reason this weekend is worth more than a parade. Ullr finishes on the Saturday that a lot of school breaks begin, and Christmas Day is the following Friday. A Thursday-to-Sunday Ullr trip and a Christmas-week stay are the same booking with a different check-out date.
It is the last weekend before Christmas-week pricing
Mid-December is the hinge of the season. Rates climb steeply from the 20th onward and roughly triple into the week between Christmas and New Year. Coming for Ullr and staying on is materially cheaper than arriving a few days later; leaving on the Sunday and coming back is not.
The mountain is still filling in
Terrain builds through December, and mid-December is meaningfully less open than Christmas week, which is itself less open than most visitors expect. Come for the town and treat the hill as the bonus — that ordering makes for a better trip than the reverse.
The drive is easier than it will be the following week
The usual mountain-corridor pattern applies — westbound pressure on Friday afternoons, eastbound on Sundays — but without the holiday surge on top. Colorado’s traction law runs from 1 September to 31 May, and an all-wheel-drive rental is not automatically compliant: check the actual tyres.

Questions, answered
When is Ullr Fest 2026?+
Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 December 2026, in Breckenridge. It is the 63rd Ullr Fest. If you have seen January, that is out of date — the festival moved to December in 2019/20 and has stayed there.
Is Ullr Fest in January?+
No, and this is the single most common mistake made about it. It was a January event until the 2018/19 season. The tourism office moved it to December for 2019/20 and it has run in December every year since. Several major visitor guides and at least one large aggregator still say January.
Is Ullr Fest free?+
Watching the parade and standing at the bonfire are free. The shotski is ticketed and 21-and-over, and the Saturday skating session has an admission price. The 2026 prices have not been published.
Is Ullr Fest kid friendly?+
The parade is, and families with pushchairs are normal there. The shotski is not — it is 21-and-over and it sets the tone on Main Street for the hour before the parade. Some floats are aimed at adults. At the bonfire, flying ash genuinely does burn holes in synthetic jackets. For small children the bigger problems are usually the cold and the dark: the parade ends after sunset.
What time is the parade?+
Not published for 2026. It has been 4 p.m. on the Thursday in recent years, running south down Main Street from Wellington Road to West Adams Avenue, with floats staging from about 2 p.m. on the 300 block of North Main. We would get there by half past two.
How do I sign up for the shotski?+
Registration for 2026 has not opened — the official page still says "coming soon". Last year it was sold in advance only, at a little over $20 with fees, with no day-of entries, 21-and-over with ID, and it sold out in 2024. Watch the official event page, or call our desk and we will tell you when we hear locally.
Where is the bonfire?+
Not confirmed for 2026. It has been at the East Sawmill lot at 203 North Main on the Thursday evening since it returned in 2021, but the 2025 sources contradict each other on both the day and the location, so we are not stating one until the schedule is out.
Can I see Ullr Fest and the snow sculptures on the same trip?+
No. The snow sculpture championships run 23 January to 2 February 2027, about five weeks later. They are two separate trips. Older forum threads that treat them as an either/or date from before Ullr moved to December.
Is it worth coming just for Ullr?+
Be realistic about what it is: a much-loved town festival whose main events compress into a few hours on a Thursday afternoon, with a crowd that is largely local and Front Range. It is a wonderful afternoon and it is not, by itself, a four-day trip. What makes the weekend worth booking is where it sits — the last weekend before Christmas-week rates, finishing on the Saturday the school holidays start.
